A Chair is to Sit

2017 • North Creek High, Bothell Washington

The artwork consists of 3 vignettes, located in 3 different areas of the campus. All 3 are high traffic areas where students pass many times a day, making the artworks easily and normally accessible, and part of the daily school life. They are meant to be interacted with in the most normal of ways-Sat Upon. This requires no special training or consideration, allowing the art to insinuate itself into the consciousness of the students subtly and easily.

Each of the vignettes creates situations, which can be thought about in many different ways, or ignored. For instance, the Big / Little raises issues of size and power in relationships, what is accepted, what is assumed. Unequal relationships sometimes change with time, and other times are a fact of life.

In each case, I am trying to provoke individual interpretations, not impose a narrative. I am also hopeful that they will be used, first and foremost, as chairs. Chairs are inherently democratic- anyone can sit, and everyone does. They don’t HAVE to have meaning beyond that, but they certainly can.

All of the chairs are made from textured and forged stainless steel.
