Coupeville High School

Whidbey Island, WA

2010

Commissioned by the Washington State Arts Commission for Coupeville High School, on Whidbey Island, WA., a flock of Book Birds is perched thru out the school grounds. Some are scattered in solitary spots, while there are two groups perched on benches. One bench is circular, built on an abandoned flagpole base, the other is irregular, a coastline bench that refers to the geography of the island. The Book Birds, in several sizes, are stainless steel books, with embossed letters on the covers, with forged bird legs.

As you walk thru the campus, you discover them in unlikely places- on a trellis, high up in the lunchroom, under an eave. The benches are focal points for perching students as well.
